No single date left such a lasting impression on the society and politics of Balochistan like August 26th, 2006. It was, no doubt, “Balochistan’s 9/11” when the province’s former governor and elected chief minister Nawab Mohammad Akbar Khan Bugti was brutally murdered by the democracy-blind military dictator, General Pervez Musharraf.
Pakistan Senate's Deputy Chairman Mir Jan Mohammed Khan Jamali has claimed that water from the swollen Indus River was directed towards Balochistan's Jaffarabad, inundating almost 85 percent of the region, in order to keep the Shahbaz Airbase in Jacobabad safe.
The day must come when sanity prevails in Balochistan, no matter which side proves to be acting in a rational manner. Pakistan is in a very bad way. By most standards of measurement, it is a failed state, or very close to it. The emergencies generated by the latest natural disasters probably won’t cause forced relocations quite as enormous as those that have been generated by the Army’s many unwise military operations.
